Unearthing History: Construction Site Discovery of Vintage Grenade Prompts Police Response in Antipolo City

ANTIPOLO CITY – During preparations for the foundation of a new house at the Victoria Valley Subdivision construction site in this city, workers unearthed an old hand grenade on Friday. Rather than leaving the potentially unstable device on-site, it was taken to the homeowners’ association office, causing concern among some residents.

Harold Gonzales, the subdivision's security officer-in-charge, promptly contacted the police to safely remove the device. Gonzales noted the possibility that the grenade, identified as an MK-2 fragmentation grenade or “pineapple grenade” commonly used by the United States forces and allies in the 20th century, might still be live despite years of burial.

Police Master Sgt. Rudy Saballero, leading the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, advised caution to construction workers, urging them not to handle old munitions they may encounter during their work. He emphasized the risk of vintage grenades, mortar shells, and bombs exploding due to improper handling, recommending that such discoveries be reported to the police for safe removal.

Saballero further suggested that subdivision officials conduct a thorough search of the site where the grenade was found, as these items might be part of a larger cache. The bomb experts securely placed the unexploded grenade in a sand-filled container before transporting it out of the neighborhood. (PNA)
