BAGUIO CITY – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) issued a call on Saturday for village leaders, including officials of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), to take the lead in identifying and establishing a regular cleanup day in their respective areas. The aim is to uphold cleanliness, prevent illnesses, and foster a healthy community.
The call was made by Ruperto Maribbay, assistant regional director of DILG-CAR, during the launch of the nationwide cleanup campaign known as “Kalinisan sa Bagong Pilipinas” at South Sanitary Camp Barangay in Baguio City.
Maribbay emphasized that this nationwide initiative, mandated by Secretary Benjamin Abalos, should be carried out in all barangays with active involvement from barangay and SK officials. The goal is to encourage community members to participate in the Kalinisan program by stepping out of their homes.
The nationwide launch aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s advocacy for a unified cleanup effort to maintain a sanitary and comfortable environment, ultimately contributing to a healthy community. After the launch, barangays are tasked with organizing regular cleanups of alleys, canals, and waterways to prevent waste accumulation and the proliferation of illness-causing insects.
Maribbay stressed that maintaining cleanliness starts within a person's residence and extends to the yard and the entire community. He urged citizens to become role models in their homes and communities, leading the regular practice of cleaning both inside and outside residences.
During the launch, partner agencies expressed their commitment to aligning their programs with the Kalinisan initiative. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – CAR pledged to mobilize 4Ps beneficiaries, KALAHI-CIDSS beneficiaries, and cash-for-work recipients to support the Kalinisan program.
Enrique Gascon, acting director of DSWD-CAR, stated, "All programs of the DSWD, we will be aligning it for this program as our contribution to the success of this initiative to make us all healthy."
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also committed support for the program, emphasizing its focus on resilience and environmental sustainability.
Helen Tibaldo, Director of the Philippine Information Agency, assured that they would utilize various information platforms for an extensive information campaign, seeking cooperation and unity for the cleaning initiative. Tibaldo mentioned reaching out to the Presidential Communications Office family in the Cordillera for support. (PNA)
