LAOAG CITY – Five exceptional students from Sarrat National High School (SNHS) in Ilocos Norte secured three gold and two silver awards at the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 5 to 8.
The mathletes of SNHS triumphed at the WIMO, a competition featuring gold medalists from around the world. They clinched gold in the final rounds of three international math Olympiads, earning them a spot at the WIMO,” said Michael Malvar, head coach of the Ilocos Norte delegation, in an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Monday.
Eighth-grader Brian Jansen Vallejo led the winning streak, earning the title of world champion with the highest score in the secondary 1 level.
Other gold medalists included 8th grader Allen Iver Barroga (Secondary 1) and 9th grader Zyrene Angelica Dulluog (Secondary 2).
Natalie Margaret Balisacan (Secondary 1; Grade 8) and Ma. Cassandra Reich Duque (Grade 11) received silver awards.
Participation in WIMO is by invitation only for gold medalists in the final rounds of three international competitions: Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad, Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad, and Guangdong Greater Bay Area (Big Bay Bei) Mathematical Olympiad.
Out of over 40,000 competitors from 12 countries, 243 gold medalists qualified for WIMO.
Saul Paulo Lazo, Provincial Board Member and chairperson of the committee on education, has requested the Ilocos Norte Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Council) to commend the awardees for bringing pride and honor to the province during its regular session on Monday. (PNA)
