PCIC Validates Claims of Antique Farmers Affected by El Niño, Compensates ASF-Affected Hog Growers

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) is currently verifying the claims of 1,752 farmers in Antique who submitted notices of loss due to the El Niño phenomenon.

Clogene Galuego, the head of PCIC Antique, mentioned in a Tuesday interview that the claims, filed in December of the previous year, pertain to 850 hectares of rice land in the province. The ongoing validation process, which involves interviews with farmers, aims to accurately assess the extent of the losses for the processing of their claims.

The compensation amounts vary from PHP5,000 to PHP7,000, depending on the severity of the damage.

Galuego emphasized that eligible farmers should have registered their crops before Nov. 15 for rain-fed areas and Nov. 16 for irrigated fields. Additionally, they were required to file their notice of loss with the PCIC or through their Municipal Agriculture Offices (MAOs) at least 20 days before harvest.

The El Niño is predicted to have adverse effects throughout the first quarter of the year, extending into the early part of the second quarter. To mitigate potential risks, the Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Program Coordinating Office in Antique has advised farmers to transition to drought-resistant crops and avoid planting rice if water is no longer available.

In a separate development, Galuego noted that over PHP12.230 million has already been disbursed to 508 hog growers in the towns of Hamtic, San Jose de Buenavista, Sibalom, and Belison in Antique, all affected by the African swine fever (ASF) in the last quarter of 2023. An additional PHP1,376,600 is set to be released to the remaining 56 hog growers in January. (PNA)
