In a pioneering effort towards environmental consciousness, solar panels are currently being installed on the rooftop of the Ilocos Norte capitol building, aiming to significantly reduce long-term electricity costs. Securing a funding of approximately PHP45 million from the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the project, initiated last December, is on track for completion in the near future.
Cipriano Martinez, the acting general manager of Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative, Inc. (INEC), disclosed that NEA has also entrusted INEC with the responsibility of implementing solar panel installations in public hospitals and schools. Once finalized, the solar power project is anticipated to reach a peak operational capacity of 470 kilowatts, with expectations of a 40% reduction in the province's electricity expenses. This reduction is attributed to the sale of power generated by the solar panels to INEC, bolstering its overall supply.
Martinez emphasized the current progress in a press conference held at the electric cooperative's main branch in Dingras, stating, "The installation of solar panels is happening now as we continue to work towards affordable and stable electricity for our member consumer owners."
Simultaneously, acknowledging the dedication of 28 INEC linemen and three engineering staff who served as project workers for up to a decade, permanent appointment orders have been issued. Martinez expressed regret over the delayed issuance and recognized the significance of their contributions to INEC, urging corrective measures and progression.
In addition to becoming permanent employees, the field workers will enjoy higher salaries and increased risk pay, effective this year. (PNA)
