DAVAO CITY – The Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte has secured a PHP30 million funding for the establishment of a multi-species marine hatchery in the region.
Mayor Al David Uy announced on Thursday that the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Davao Region (BFAR-11) will provide the hatchery, benefiting small farmers, particularly those in cooperatives and associations, by ensuring a sustainable supply of fingerlings.
During the closed season, this facility will be a crucial means for them to maintain their livelihood,” Uy stated. The hatchery is set to be constructed in Barangay Poblacion, Kaputian District.
Uy noted that the project aligns with Republic Act 11808, which establishes a Multi-Species Marine Hatchery on the island.
BFAR-11 Director Relly Garcia highlighted the significant impact of the multi-species marine hatchery project on the city, emphasizing its role in breeding and propagating diverse marine species such as milkfish, tilapia, danggit, lapu-lapu, and pompano, among others. The initiative not only addresses local aquaculture needs but also generates employment opportunities for the community. (PNA)
