Indonesian President Joko Widodo Commits to Reexamining Mary Jane Veloso's Case, Confirms Philippine President Marcos during Official Visit"
During a meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo assured President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. that the Indonesian government would "reexamine" the case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina on death row for drug charges, according to a statement from Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil on Thursday.
Widodo made this commitment in response to Marcos' request during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Indonesia in May. Marcos had urged Widodo to reconsider Veloso's case "as a favor to the Philippines."
Marcos, currently hosting Widodo for a three-day official visit, remains hopeful for clemency for Veloso at the appropriate time. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro stated that Marcos updated Widodo on the progress of the case against Veloso's recruiters in the Philippines.
In their bilateral meeting, Marcos informed Widodo that the required legal interrogatories from the Philippine Regional Trial Court regarding Veloso's case have been sent to Jakarta for her response. Veloso was arrested in 2010 after Indonesian authorities discovered 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase. In April 2015, she received a last-minute reprieve when the Philippine government informed Indonesia that her recruiters had surrendered.(PNA)
