Germany Pledges Collaboration with Manila to Prevent South China Sea Crisis and Uphold International

The German Government Expresses Willingness to Collaborate with Manila in South China Sea Crisis Prevention

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock affirmed on Thursday that Germany is prepared to cooperate with Manila to avert a crisis in the South China Sea (SCS) by supporting international law and bolstering maritime security. Baerbock, addressing both local and foreign press in Manila, raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region, particularly China's expansive maritime claims and harassment of Filipino vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

Baerbock noted the turbulent situation in the South China Sea, emphasizing the recent incidents where the Chinese Coast Guard employed lasers and water cannons against Philippine resupply vessels. She stressed that such actions, including collisions, are worrisome for Europe as well, despite the geographical distance, as they violate the rights and economic development opportunities of the Philippines and other littoral states.

Highlighting the clarity of the 2016 Arbitral Ruling that Beijing's claims are not covered by international law, Baerbock mentioned Germany's commitment to work with the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The German Foreign Minister also announced plans to enhance maritime security collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), including potential provision of additional drones for the region. She reiterated Germany's support for initiatives and mechanisms aimed at peacefully resolving tensions in the South China Sea.

Beyond maritime concerns, Baerbock and Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo discussed Germany's peace initiatives, development cooperation with the Philippines, and strategies to boost bilateral trade and investments in renewable energy. Manalo expressed gratitude for Berlin's steadfast support for international law, considering Germany a valuable partner for the Philippines both bilaterally and multilaterally.(PNA)
