From Seed Capital to Success: PRIME's Multimillion-Dollar Journey in Claver, Surigao del Norte

BUTUAN CITY – A village community in the mining town of Claver, Surigao del Norte, transformed a modest PHP100,000 seed capital into a thriving multimillion-dollar enterprise known as PRIME (Panaghiusa, Reporma, Inisyatibo Magpalambo sa Ekonomiya). From its humble beginnings, PRIME has expanded its operations to include a pharmacy, microlending, hardware, and grocery store.

Marlyn Cañon, the group leader, proudly shared their success story during the two-day People’s Organizations Conference held on Jan. 9 to 10 in Claver – Surigao del Norte's mining capital, where PRIME was highlighted as one of the 24 "success stories" presented by the Taganito Mining Corporation (TMC).

Cañon, speaking in the local dialect during an interview, emphasized the significant growth of their businesses, enabling the 11-strong members of PRIME to generate substantial monthly income, freeing them from the need to work.

The conference provided an opportunity for Cañon and 215 other members and officers of people's organizations (POs) supported by TMC to gain insights into product development, market access, expansion strategies, and effective networking for business enhancement.

Melith Matabaran, TMC's head of Information, Education, and Communications Section, explained that the 24 POs are recipients of TMC's livelihood program, with most of these groups organized and supported by the company since 2001. The POs are involved in community-based merchandising, agriculture, veterinary business, aquaculture, and integrated farming, including goat raising and pineapple production.

Matabaran highlighted that the livelihood organizations benefitted from the expertise of resource speakers during the conference, including a representative from the Surigao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI).

Moreover, the conference aimed to facilitate online collaboration and empower the POs in digital marketing, providing them with tools to connect their businesses digitally and collaborate with other stakeholders in the online space. (PNA)
