TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to construct a PHP40-million multipurpose satellite warehouse in Allen, Northern Samar, dedicated to storing essential food packs and other relief materials.
Grace Subong, the DSWD Eastern Visayas regional director, disclosed on Tuesday that the groundbreaking for the project took place on Jan. 8. The warehouse is designed to accommodate food packs and materials for up to 30,000 families, ensuring efficient and prompt distribution during times of need.
In a phone interview, Subong stated, "It will be equipped with office space, staff quarters, and the ability to store thousands of food packs."
The facility is expected to be completed within the year and will primarily serve families in Northern Samar, an area frequently affected by flooding during weather disturbances.
Currently, the DSWD prepositions food packs in a warehouse managed by the Office of the Civil Defense in Allen town, which is utilized for storing emergency response equipment.
In addition to Allen town, the DSWD routinely stores family food packs in various locations, including Biri, Northern Samar; Jipapad, Taft, and Guiuan in Eastern Samar; Almagro and Santo Niño in Samar; Maripipi Island, Kawayan, and Naval in Biliran province; Sogod, Southern Leyte; and the DSWD regional resource operations center in Palo, Leyte.
Establishing warehouses in areas lacking DSWD facilities ensures the swift delivery of relief goods in the event of disasters. (PNA)
