Baguio City's SPES 2024 Initiative: 300 Underprivileged Students to Secure Summer Employment

BAGUIO CITY – The city government plans to provide employment for around 300 underprivileged students during the upcoming summer break through the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) 2024.

Leandro Tabilog, the head of the Public Employment and Services Office (PESO), mentioned in an interview on Tuesday that they are awaiting confirmation from the Department of Labor (DOLE) regarding the budget for the initiative.

Eligible students participating in the program will receive a daily wage of PHP590, totaling PHP17,700 for a month's work. DOLE covers 40 percent of the wage, while the city government contributes the remaining 60 percent.

Enacted under Republic Act 10917 (Expanded Special Program for Employment of Students Act), the SPES program aims to assist financially challenged yet deserving students in completing their studies by offering employment opportunities during school breaks.

The program is open to students aged 15 to 30 who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in the next school term following their SPES employment. The combined annual income of the student's family should not exceed PHP169,824.

Applications for previous SPES grantees will be accepted on Jan. 20 and 21, while new applicants can apply from Jan. 26 to 28.

Tabilog mentioned that there were also 300 SPES grantees in the previous year. (PNA)
