ILOILO CITY – Spectators were treated to a preview of performances from nine festivals participating in the "Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan" during Friday afternoon's opening salvo.
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., in his pre-performance address, described the event as an offering to Señor Santo Niño, the patron of the Dinagyang Festival. It serves as an opportunity for the province to showcase elements of its political history, agriculture, religion, culture, and food to the city and the global audience.
Kasadyahan, a major event for the 2024 Dinagyang Festival, will feature presentations from various municipalities in Iloilo province, competing for top honors. These include Leon town's Kaing Festival, honoring the "kaing" or large bamboo basket symbolizing abundant harvest and natural resources; Banate's Kasag Festival, celebrating the contribution of the blue crab to the local economy; Leganes' cultural-dance drama Saad Festival; Oton's Katagman Festival, highlighting the history and culture of Panay's ancient trading port; and Maasin town's Tultugan Festival, paying tribute to the tultugan, a native bamboo percussion instrument used for communication and creating music.
Other participating festivals include Anilao's Banaag Festival, known for its thousands of beautiful lights; New Lucena's Cry of Jelicuon Festival, re-enacting Ilonggos' struggle for freedom against Spanish rule; Calinog's Hirinugyaw-Suguidanonay Festival, showcasing the art of storytelling through chanting; and Zarraga's Pantat Festival, a tribute to the town's catfish variety.
Joyce Clavecillas, executive director of the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., overseeing the 2024 Dinagyang Festival, encouraged visitors to support Kasadyahan, highlighting the excellence expected in the performances. Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Rep. Jojo Ang pledged PHP10 million worth of infrastructure projects to the winning municipality.
"Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan" is scheduled for the afternoon of January 27, presented in four stages in a carousel format. It is expected to conclude just in time for the religious sadad (merrymaking) led by the San Jose Parish. (PNA)
