DUMAGUETE CITY – The Department of the Interior and Local Government - Central Visayas (DILG-7) has imposed a nine-month suspension on a city councilor in this Negros Oriental capital, allegedly due to a graft complaint involving a construction project at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) - Bais City campus.
Councilor Joe Kenneth Arbas received the suspension order on Friday, delivered by DILG-7 legal officer Michael Bandal and Director Farah Diba Gentuya. Notably, Arbas was served the order while undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
The suspension, effective immediately and without pay, was mandated following a directive from the Office of the Ombudsman, triggered by a graft complaint filed by Michael Daniel. However, the DILG-7 officials clarified that they are not privy to the specific details of the case against Arbas.
Arbas argued that the complaint was unrelated to his role as a councilor but pertained to a construction project at the NORSU - Bais City campus in which he is involved. According to him, the case was previously filed with the Bais City prosecutor’s office and had already been dismissed.
The Ombudsman's ruling cited the suspension on grounds of "conduct prejudicial to the public interest," as clarified by Bandal. (PNA)
