BUTUAN CITY – Approximately 240 seasonal farmworkers hailing from various towns in Dinagat Islands, bound for deployment to South Korea this year, have commenced a 15-day basic Korean language tutorial starting this Monday.
Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. spearheaded this initiative, with the backing of the Migrant Workers Office and the Provincial Board Members League of the Philippines. The tutorial aims to instill confidence in seasonal workers by equipping them with language skills crucial for navigating their new environment, accessing services, and engaging in their daily activities.
Having already witnessed the successful return of 472 seasonal workers from a six-month stint in Korea in November of the previous year, the program remains a top priority for Governor Demerey. Its primary goal is to provide income opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk, especially those whose livelihoods were affected by Super Typhoon Odette in December 2021 and subsequent natural calamities.
Additionally, the program seeks to train seasonal workers in the application of new and advanced technologies in agriculture and fisheries, contributing to increased production in Dinagat.
The provincial government emphasized the significance of effective communication for seasonal workers with their Korean employers, colleagues, and locals. This proficiency is crucial for daily work, social interactions, and workplace integration, as stated in the government's Monday statement.
Upon completing the necessary documentation and meeting other requirements, the seasonal workers will embark on their journey to South Korea on varying schedules throughout the year. (PNA)
