BACOLOD CITY – The provincial government of Negros Occidental is gearing up to transform the Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary in Murcia town into an environmentally friendly, top-tier resort to bolster tourist influx in the province.
Recent updates on Tuesday outline plans for upgrading hotel facilities and introducing new tourism attractions.
Governor Eugenio Lacson stated, “Mambukal has always been a hallmark of our provincial tourism. As such, we aim to develop a world-class resort while simultaneously promoting ecological sustainability and protection.”
Lacson mentioned that the hotel would undergo expansion with an increase in the number of rooms, catering to mid- to high-range prices. The province also envisions incorporating activities like trail running, hiking, biking, horseback riding, as well as installing tramlines and ziplines.
The provincial government recently completed the acquisition of the 10-hectare property encompassing the resort’s renowned seven falls from the Mambucal Real Estate Development Corp. for PHP80 million.
Lacson emphasized the province's commitment to exercising control and ownership over the surrounding land to focus on reforestation, safeguarding the falls, and preserving natural resources.
In December 2021, after almost two years of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Governor Lacson declared the Mambukal Resort a wildlife sanctuary through Executive Order (EO) 21-45. The EO cited the area's status as home to several wildlife species protected under Republic Act 9147, also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
EO 21-45 prohibits activities such as hunting, wounding, taking, or killing endemic or wildlife animals, as well as any destruction of vegetation or disturbance to the habitat of the protected wildlife within the territory.
Situated at the base of Mt. Kanlaon, the Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary is recognized as one of the few bat sanctuaries in the country. (PNA)
