SPMC Physician Urges Vigilance: Wear Masks and Practice Hygiene to Guard Against Flu Virus in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – During a virtual press briefing, a physician from the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) emphasized the importance of wearing face masks and practicing proper hygiene to minimize the risk of contracting the flu virus.

Dr. Alisa Betina Lim, the chief resident of the SPMC-Department of Emergency Medicine, urged the public to be cautious as mycoplasma pneumonia, commonly known as "walking pneumonia," is present in the country.

Lim highlighted the respiratory nature of the illness and recommended the use of face masks, especially in crowded areas, as a preventive measure.

While acknowledging that there are no reported cases of mycoplasma pneumonia in the city yet, Lim urged residents to stay vigilant in the face of the ongoing threat to public health.

She mentioned that the SPMC had recently handled numerous emergency flu cases, considering December as a flu season. Lim emphasized the importance of proper handwashing and hygiene practices to curb the spread of the virus.

Although mycoplasma pneumonia is generally less severe than typical pneumonia, Lim noted that individuals with underlying health conditions and weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms. (PNA)
