DAVAO CITY – Dabawenyos Urged to Prioritize Road Discipline as 2023 Road Crash Incidents Reach 5,678
The city government of Davao issued a plea to residents on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of road discipline as the number of road crash incidents in 2023 soared to 5,678. Data from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) revealed a 6 percent increase in reported incidents compared to the same period in 2022, which had recorded 5,381 incidents.
The DCPO noted that the surge in incidents was attributed to the return to the new normal, with face-to-face classes resumed and all establishments operating normally after the pandemic. The total number of vehicles involved in road crashes also rose by 11 percent, reaching 10,169 in 2023 compared to 9,172 in 2022.
In response to the escalating cases, the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) issued a stern warning to motorists, urging strict adherence to traffic rules. The call for vigilance comes in the wake of two separate road crashes on January 6, resulting in the tragic deaths of two motorcycle drivers.
The incidents, occurring in Barangay Sasa and Barangay Calinan, were attributed to factors such as overtaking in a blind spot and human error, emphasizing the need for enhanced traffic rules and penalties, according to CTTMO head Dionisio Abude.
Abude stressed the necessity of filing criminal cases against erring motorists in the event of casualties, and announced the implementation of a new speed limit policy on January 11. The policy aims to reduce road crashes on major highways through higher penalties and a more comprehensive speed limit for heavy vehicles. (PNA)
