Former Dumaguete City Official Urges Youth to Emulate Rizal's Values in Nation-Building

DUMAGUETE CITY – On Saturday, a former city official and youth leader in this Negros Oriental capital urged the youth to embody the values of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, and play an active role as catalysts for change, promoting peace, progress, and nation-building.

Renz Macion, former Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president and city councilor, emphasized that the youth are not just the future but also the present, urging them to harness their potential for the collective betterment of the country. Speaking during the city’s commemoration of the 127th martyrdom of Rizal at Quezon Park, Macion highlighted that historical figures like Rizal and Andres Bonifacio were in their prime during pivotal moments in Philippine history.

While acknowledging Rizal's sacrifice, Macion encouraged today's youth to actively contribute to society without resorting to extreme measures, striving instead to enhance freedom in a robust and inclusive manner.

Vice Mayor Ma. Isabel Sagarbarria, who led the commemoration ceremonies, emphasized the importance of remembering Rizal's sacrifices and called on constituents to "selflessly serve" the community. She urged the youth to engage in nation-building, seeking guidance from their elders.

The morning commemoration included sounding sirens, church bells, an inter-faith prayer, flag-raising ceremony, and wreath-laying at Rizal’s monument. Soldiers from the 11th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army performed a 21-gun salute and played “Taps” in honor of the national hero. City government employees, representatives from government agencies, non-government organizations, and civil society attended the event. (PNA)
