TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has provided Maasin City in Southern Leyte with PHP500,000 to facilitate the digitalization of local government services. Ernesto Granada, the Regional Director of DOST Eastern Visayas, conveyed the assistance to Mayor Nacional Mercado, marking the commencement of the “Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Ecosystem Development Toward Smart and Sustainable Maasin City” project.
Granada, in a Thursday phone interview, stated, “This fund will jumpstart the development of the STI Ecosystem of Maasin City towards a smart and sustainable future for the people of Maasin.”
Mayor Mercado highlighted that the project aims to establish an appropriate digital infrastructure platform, enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and transparency of local government services. He expressed confidence that this initiative would create a solid foundation for Maasin City's transformation into a smarter and more sustainable urban center.
The Smart City project in Maasin encompasses three key components: benchmarking and best practices research, systems review and development of a five-year information system strategic plan, and capacity building and training needs. According to DOST, a Smart City employs modern technology to enhance services and functions as a technologically advanced urban area. (PNA)
