CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The J.R. Borja General Hospital (JRBGH), under the city's administration, is set to establish a modern mental health facility following the launch of the mental health benefits package by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
Dr. Ferdinand Miranda, Chief of Hospital at JRBGH, revealed in an interview on Wednesday that the upcoming facility would be named the "Cagayan de Oro Center for Mental Health," a collaborative effort between the city government and the House of Hope Foundation.
Miranda outlined plans for the center, which will be housed in an independent building within the JRBGH compound and staffed by 11 personnel, predominantly from the medical profession. Construction is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of the year.
Currently, a temporary mental health facility at the House of Hope in Lumbia serves 67 patients, including individuals from neighboring provinces like Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.
The city government envisions transforming the new center into a specialized mental health hospital, the second of its kind following the Mindanao Mental Hospital in Davao City.
In parallel, Merlynn Ybañez, the information officer of PhilHealth-Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), announced that the agency would soon begin accrediting health facilities catering to the mental health package.
Under Republic Act No. 11036, or the Mental Health Act, PhilHealth is mandated to provide and enhance service coverage for all Filipinos, irrespective of socioeconomic status, in the treatment of individuals with mental disorders.
PhilHealth President and CEO Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. stated in a release that they would implement a progressive mental health package, extending benefits to both members and their dependents. (PNA)
