Benguet Allocates PHP21.35 Million in Aid to Underprivileged Residents in 2023

BAGUIO CITY – A total of PHP21.35 million in assistance was extended to 1,998 patients and underprivileged residents facing financial difficulties in Benguet during 2023.

The yearend report from the Provincial Social Work and Development Office (PSWDO) revealed that 1,961 individuals received medical and burial aid, while 37 families were granted emergency shelter assistance for homes damaged by calamities through the localized Assistance to Individuals in Crisis (AICs) program.

According to Silverio Pilo, Benguet's provincial information officer, PHP20.95 million was allocated for medical and burial assistance, and PHP405,000 was distributed as shelter aid. Pilo emphasized that these initiatives reflect Governor Melchor Diclas' commitment to supporting the indigent population.

Furthermore, Pilo noted that, with assistance from Benguet Lone District Rep. Erip Yap, the provincial government increased cash aid for individuals undergoing dialysis, chemotherapy, and heart operations from PHP5,000 to a maximum of PHP20,000. Notably, heart surgeries are now available at the Benguet General Hospital (BeGH), a provincial government-managed facility, reducing costs for patients who would otherwise need to travel to Metro Manila for the service.

Pilo highlighted the successful collaboration between the provincial government and Congressman Yap, which has significantly contributed to extending assistance to more indigent individuals in the province. (PNA)
