PNR Resumes Legazpi to Naga Train Services After Six-Year Hiatus
After a six-year hiatus, the Philippine National Railways (PNR) has reinstated its train services from Legazpi, Albay to Naga, Camarines Sur, marking a significant milestone for the region. Jaypee Relleve, the manager of PNR's Engineering Department, highlighted the revival of the Legazpi-Naga route as a priority project under the Marcos administration.
The suspension of the route in April 2017 was attributed to a shortage of locomotive engines and train coaches. Relleve emphasized that the reintroduction of train services offers a convenient, safe, and reliable public transport option for residents of Naga and Legazpi. He mentioned plans for regular trips and ongoing studies to explore additional routes, considering the positive feedback from commuters.
PNR's broader objective is to establish connectivity from Legazpi City to Calamba, ultimately extending to Metro Manila. Commuters like Marivic Pelones and Erasto Alerta expressed appreciation for the revived train services, citing cost savings and improved travel experiences.
Pelones mentioned, "It's a big help for all of us, I hope they will add more trips that can accommodate more passengers." Alerta noted the positive changes, comparing the current service to his last trip in 1997, and commended the PNR for enhancing passenger comfort.
Architect Kristine Lagman highlighted the reopening of the PNR route as a catalyst for development, providing opportunities and convenience to the public. She emphasized the significance of a railway system as an indicator of economic and transport improvements.
Albay 3rd District Rep. Fernando Cabredo also underscored the positive impact of PNR trips on connectivity between Albay and Camarines Sur. He anticipates economic growth, tourism collaborations, regional integration, and environmental benefits, especially for residents of Ligao City.
The Legazpi-Naga route consists of 15 stations, served by two train sets with diesel-hydraulic locomotives and three coaches each, accommodating over 800 passengers. The schedule includes morning and evening trips in both directions, with a minimum fare of PHP20 for the first station, reaching PHP155 for the entire route. Students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities can avail themselves of a 20-percent discount. (PNA)
