Free Wi-Fi Access Extends Across Cebu City's Public Spaces and Educational Institutions"
The Cebu City government's Information Technology Office announced that public schools, barangay halls, public markets, and sports gymnasiums in all 80 villages are now equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots, providing free internet access to learners in their respective communities. Conrado Ordesta III, assistant head of the Management Information and Computer Services (MICS), revealed that the city allocated PHP8 million for interconnectivity, completing the installation of Wi-Fi gadgets in the remaining rural barangays this month. The program, initiated last year with 50 barangays, now covers all 80 villages, including urban and mountain barangays. Learners can enjoy an hour of free internet connectivity in public hotspots without a password while in school. The MICS monitoring report shows that Lorega-San Miguel, an uptown village, has the highest utilization rate of free internet connection. This initiative aligns with the Wireless Internet Access for Educational Institution Ordinance authored in 2018 by Cebu City South District Rep. Eduardo Rama Jr., emphasizing free internet connectivity in schools and public spaces.
