ILOILO CITY – Mayor Jerry Treñas has urged the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to compel the National Grid Corporation (NGCP) to enhance its transmission lines, as Panay Island, including Iloilo City, grapples with persistent power outages since January 2.
Expressing frustration, Treñas called for the DOE and ERC to enforce corrective measures on NGCP, emphasizing the need for necessary improvements to prevent recurring power disruptions. He cited the failure of NGCP to implement identified measures following a power outage in the region last April.
"I pity the city. We are growing very fast. We are promoting the city, unfortunately, this is really a difficult time," he added during a media briefing on Thursday, following a virtual emergency meeting with national government agencies, power stakeholders, and Western Visayas governors.
Meanwhile, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. discussed the status of DOE directives implemented after the 2023 power outage. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., through the DOE, instructed NGCP to be transparent, synchronize protection relays, monitor energy sources, complete the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) Backbone Project's third phase, and expedite Ancillary Services Procurement Agreement (ASPA) approval.
Defensor highlighted the failure to rationalize grid demand after the Panay Energy Development Corporation's generating unit 1 tripped on January 2 due to a lack of reserve power. He noted that supply outside Panay is limited until the completion of the CNP Backbone Project's third phase in March next year.
Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla directed NGCP to enhance protocols for better sector responsiveness. (PNA)
