Firecracker Incidents Surge in Pangasinan: One Fatality, Indiscriminate Firing, and Tragic Explosions Mark New Year Revelry


 In the province of Pangasinan, from December 21, 2023, to January 1, 2024, the police recorded a total of 65 incidents related to firecrackers, resulting in one fatality. Additionally, there was one indiscriminate firing incident during the New Year celebrations.

According to Captain Renante dela Cruz, the public relations officer of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, among the 65 victims, 33 were adults and 32 were minors. Dela Cruz mentioned that many of the children were injured while handling unexploded firecrackers, while adults were actively using them.

The injuries were caused by various firecrackers such as "kwitis," "whistle bomb," "five star," "boga," and exploded fountains, among others. Most victims received treatment and were sent home, but 11 are still undergoing medical care.

In Barangay Malued, Dagupan City, a tragic incident occurred on December 25 when firecrackers stored at a house under construction exploded during a drinking session. Seventeen individuals were injured, and one person died. The blast affected a total of 21 houses, but the name of the fatality was not disclosed.

The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office reported that the 65 firecracker-related incidents marked a 41 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Dela Cruz also mentioned an indiscriminate firing incident during the New Year revelry in Barangay Longos, San Fabian town, where two individuals sustained injuries. The suspect, identified as Kempee Serran Marcella, was arrested, and the victims are now in stable condition. However, the firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered. Additionally, a fire broke out at a house and a junk shop in Barangay Mayombo, Dagupan City, in the early hours of Monday.
