DepEd Considers Training for Educators and Parents to Detect Bullying Signs

DepEd Mulls Training for Teachers and Parents to Detect Bullying 'Red Flags

The Department of Education (DepEd) is contemplating the implementation of training programs for teachers and parents to identify "red flags" indicative of bullying in schools. DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa revealed that the initiative aims to equip educators and parents with the ability to recognize signs of bullying promptly, facilitating immediate interventions for affected Filipino learners. Poa noted that pilot areas have been identified for the training, emphasizing the importance of gaining parental support in addressing bullying, a concern that significantly impacts the mental health of bullied students. The DepEd is also enhancing its reporting system to encourage victims to come forward, acknowledging the prevalence of underreporting. Additionally, anti-bullying hotlines have been established to provide bullied students with a direct channel to report abuse or violence, including cyberbullying, offering an alternative for those hesitant to approach school authorities. The DepEd is actively working on projects and advocacies at the school level to raise awareness about responsible internet use and address cyberbullying. Plans are underway to incorporate the responsible use of the internet into the DepEd curriculum. The agency is also collaborating with the Department of Health to provide mental health support for both bullied students and bullies.(PNA)
