1st Infantry Division Intensifies Operations Against Extremist Groups Following Ambush in Lanao del Norte

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY The Army's 1st Infantry Division (ID) has escalated its military operations against armed extremist groups responsible for Wednesday's ambush that claimed the lives of two soldiers in Lanao del Norte province.

In a statement released on Thursday, Maj. Gen. Gabriel Viray III, 1ID commander, denounced the "cowardly act of violence" directed at the soldiers of the Army's 51st Infantry Battalion (51IB).

"We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our troops and the local communities we serve," said Viray.

According to military reports, Staff Sergeants Raul Pabuaya and Murphy Delos Santos from the 51IB intelligence unit were both "killed in action" during an ambush by six members of the Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group along the Main Supply Route from Barangay Lininding, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur, to Munai town, Lanao del Norte.

Surviving the attack, Staff Sgt. Joenipher Etol was rescued by 51IB soldiers.

Maj. Mark Joseph L. Jaque, 51IB officer-in-charge, confirmed that the families of the fallen soldiers have been notified of the incident and provided with support. (PNA)
