Bacolod City's Triumphs in 2023: Achievements Across Governance, Housing, Culture, and Sustainable Transportation

GOING GLOBAL. Masskara Festival dancers and Bacolod City officials led by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (center in Barong Tagalog) visit the New York State Capitol in Albany City on June 1, 2023. They were welcomed by the first Filipino-American elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Steven Raga, who organized the first Philippine Independence Day celebration at the state capitol.

BACOLOD CITY –The inaugural year of Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez's administration in 2023 brought numerous accolades to the "City of Smiles," with a vision to elevate Bacolod into a "super city" by unleashing the full potential of its people and local resources.

Despite facing challenges, the city achieved significant milestones in various sectors throughout the past year, including local governance, housing, culture and tourism, peace and order, and the introduction of eco-friendly public transportation.

Seal of Good Local Governance Award
In December, Bacolod City earned the prestigious Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) award from the Department of the Interior and Local Government for the first time under Mayor Benitez's leadership. This recognition underscores the city's commitment to excellence, transparency, and public service, with a renewed dedication to fostering good governance practices and delivering essential services.

First 4PH Project in the Country
Bacolod City stands as the first local government unit in the Philippines to sign a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development to implement the administration's flagship shelter program, Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (4PH). The pilot project, Yuhum Residences in Barangay Vista Alegre, features mid-rise condominium buildings, and the awarding of housing units to the initial 288 buyer-beneficiaries is scheduled for early next year.

MassKara Festival Goes Global
In a groundbreaking move, the MassKara Festival reached New York in June, enhancing the international exposure of one of the Philippines' most vibrant celebrations. Dancers from Barangay Granada showcased their talents during the 125th Philippine Independence Anniversary Commemoration Parade on Madison Avenue. This global expansion continued with performances in the 2023 Busan International Dance Festival in South Korea, prompting invitations from foreign embassies and cultural events abroad.

Bacolod City Police Named Best in the Philippines
Recognized for their outstanding performance and exemplary deeds beyond the call of duty, the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) received the distinction of being the Best City Police Office during the 122nd Police Service Anniversary of the Philippine National Police in August. Mayor Benitez praised the BCPO for its remarkable accomplishments, highlighting the team's leadership, professionalism, and unwavering dedication, which instills trust and confidence among the people of Bacolod.

Introduction of the E-Jeep
In July, Mayor Benitez signed an investment intention agreement with Jiangsu Fengchuen New Energy Power Technology Co. Ltd. for the establishment of an industrial complex to produce e-vehicles for local and Southeast Asian markets. The initiative included the launch of China-made electric (e)-jeepneys, a project by e-Future Motors Philippines, Inc., promoting environmentally friendly and cost-efficient modernized public transportation with the iconic Pinoy jeepney aesthetic.
