DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 10 Sept) – An Australian national in possession of a disassembled firearm was arrested at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the F. Bangoy International airport.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ian Maxwell. The 58-year old Maxwell has been staying in the city for two weeks and was bound for Manila when he was caught bringing an unlicensed .38 caliber pistol in his luggage after it passed through the Initial Security Screening Checkpoint (ISSCP)’s Xray machine.
Police authorities prevented the suspect from boarding Philippine Airlines flight no. PR816 and brought him to the Sasa Police Station.
Maxwell told the police that the confiscated firearm was his collection of antique items.
Chief Insp. Milgrace Driz, spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) said that they will investigate the suspect to check if he is involved in any crime in the city.
The suspect is faced with charges for violation of the Republic Act (RA) 10591, otherwise known as Comprehensive Firearm and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Under Section 31 of RA 10591, anyone caught carrying a firearm without permit to carry outside of residence will be penalized by “prision correccional” (from six months and one day to six years), and fined P10,000. (Antonio L. Colina IV / MindaNews) - From mindanews.com
