Laoag City General Hospital (LCGH) has recently received a pair of medical devices—an ultrasound machine and a computed tomography (CT) scanner—worth a combined PHP50 million. These additions aim to enhance the hospital's services despite ongoing operational challenges.
Dr. Marsha Lou Wapan, the officer-in-charge at LCGH, informed the media on Tuesday that they are currently awaiting clearance from both the Department of Health (DOH) and the Food and Drug Administration before the equipment can be put to use. The acquisition of these advanced medical tools was made possible through congressional funding.
Dr. Wapan expressed optimism that the new equipment will significantly augment the hospital's capacity to cater to patients, ultimately generating revenue and offsetting previous years of financial losses. Some patients had been avoiding the Ilocos Norte hospital due to non-functional equipment.
In 2019, LCGH accumulated debts exceeding PHP78 million, partly attributed to equipment acquisition. Despite facing financial challenges, the city government opposed a bankruptcy proposal and actively sought alternative solutions, including securing donations for new equipment.
Financial records indicate that the hospital has struggled with an average annual net loss of PHP50 million from 2017 to 2022. These recent acquisitions mark a crucial step towards revitalizing LCGH and improving healthcare services in the region
