DUMAGUETE CITY – The recently inaugurated Pumping Station (PS) 21 and Transmission Pipe Bridge by Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW) will enhance the water supply of the Negros Oriental capital, safeguarding it from the impact of El Niño.
MDW Chief Operating Officer Angelo David Berba affirmed this on Friday following the ceremonial switch-on of the facility in Barangay Cadawinonan, linked to the transmission pipeline in Barangay Candauay.
“The facility is anticipated to yield up to 3 million liters per day, benefiting over 5,000 households, or approximately 20,000 residents in the areas of Batinguel, Taclobo, Motong, and Daro,” Berba stated.
He emphasized that the PHP30-million pumping station, operational since January 11, ensures an abundant water supply in Dumaguete during the El Niño phenomenon.
Berba assured, “In terms of the water table and the recharge rate, we have more than enough water as our source is coming from nearby Valencia town with underground systems flowing to Dumaguete.”
Prior to Pumping Station 21's construction, MDW generated up to 45 million liters per day, depending on customer demands. Berba admitted to a "shortage" of water supply during peak hours last year, with MDW supplying about 95 percent.
Additionally, another pumping station in Barangay Talay is expected to operate this year, fulfilling the city's requirements fully.
Berba stated, “This is proof of our commitment to excellence and the welfare of the community we serve. It represents a vital step forward in ensuring the sustainable provision of clean and safe water for the people of Dumaguete City. Moreover, it is only one of the multiple joint initiatives with DCWD (Dumaguete City Water District) that are lined up for 2024 and onwards.”
Established in February 2021, MDW is a joint venture between DCWD and Metro Pacific Water, aiming to enhance water services in Dumaguete and nearby communities. (PNA)
