SAN JUAN, La Union – The hosting of the World Surf League (WSL) International Pro at Urbiztondo Beach from Jan. 22 to 28 is poised to bring significant benefits to this province's tourism and economy, with around 250 professional surfers expected to participate from the Philippines and abroad.
In an interview on Friday, Provincial Information Officer Rowan Joshua Dimaculangan highlighted that this marks the second consecutive year La Union is hosting the WSL, specifically for the International Pro Qualifying Series and Long Board Tour.
The provincial government has collaborated with the United Philippines Surfing Association, the municipality of San Juan, the Department of Tourism, and other stakeholders for this sports event. Participants from France, Indonesia, Japan, Sweden, Taiwan, and Thailand will compete against Filipino surfers.
The opening ceremony on Jan. 22 will take place at Flotsam and Jetsam Artist Beach Hostel in San Juan.
Dimaculangan expressed pride, stating, "It is an honor for us as it looks like La Union is a very viable destination for this activity, viable for economic growth, and to be visited by international tourists."
During the WSL event from Jan. 20 to 26, 2023, the Provincial Tourism Office recorded 17,976 tourists. Accommodation establishments in San Juan town were fully booked, with some tourists extending their stay to neighboring towns like Bacnotan and San Fernando City.
Dimaculangan expects a similar or higher turnout this year, with over 200 accommodation establishments likely to be fully booked. He also anticipates that restaurants will experience increased business.
The provincial government ensures peace and order during the international competition through coordination with the Philippine National Police, other law enforcement agencies, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Dimaculangan expressed hope that the competition will establish La Union as a "partner and destination" for international tournaments, citing other tourist attractions like Tangadan Falls, grape-picking, and historical architectural sites. (PNA)
