Crisis Unfolds: Shear Line Effects Claim 16 Lives in Davao Region, Prompting Evacuations and Relief Efforts

 In Davao City, the death toll resulting from the effects of the shear line has risen to 16, with five individuals reported injured as of Monday, according to the regional Office of the Civil Defense (OCD-11).



Ednar Dayanghirang, the director of OCD-11, revealed that incidents of flooding and landslides caused by the shear line have been observed in the provinces of Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, and Davao del Norte since January 16.

Fortunately, the government's evacuation calls were heeded, and people evacuated when flooding occurred, Dayanghirang stated in a press briefing in Davao City. The recorded deaths include 12 in Davao de Oro, 2 in Davao City, 1 in Davao Oriental, and 1 in Davao Occidental.

Dayanghirang highlighted the unprecedented magnitude of the flooding, affecting more than 600,000 people and covering a vast area. According to OCD-11 records, 337 barangays, comprising 134,879 families or 606,483 individuals, have been affected.

The reported damage to agriculture and infrastructure amounts to approximately PHP68 million and PHP26 million, respectively. Additionally, 161 houses have been damaged, and 29 roads and bridges remain impassable. The Department of Social Welfare and Development, along with local government units, has provided assistance totaling PHP49 million to date.
