On Thursday, the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO5) commemorated the heroism of the 44 Special Action Forces (SAF) personnel who lost their lives in an anti-terrorist operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, nine years ago. The PRO5 emphasized that the sacrifices made by these individuals should serve as a perpetual reminder to all police officers to embody heroism, greatness, and act with honor and love for the country.
Maj. Gen. Rudolph B. Dimas, the Director for Plans of the Philippine National Police (PNP), served as the guest speaker at PRO5's National Day of Remembrance observance at Camp Simeon Ola. He conveyed the message of PNP Chief, Gen. Benjamin C. Acorda Jr.
Dimas highlighted the dedication and courage displayed by the SAF 44 in the face of danger, illustrating the highest ideals of service, patriotism, and sacrifice. He emphasized that the Mamasapano incident continues to remind law enforcement officers of the daily challenges and risks they face in safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
As a former SAF director, Dimas expressed that the memory of the SAF 44 serves as a lasting inspiration, urging everyone to persist in advocating for justice and peace in the nation.
He stressed the importance of unity, coordination, and effective communication in the pursuit of national security. Dimas urged individuals to let the sacrifices of the heroes motivate them to strive for excellence in their duty to protect and serve. He called for a renewed commitment to strengthen law enforcement agencies, enhance operational capabilities, and ensure the necessary support for crucial missions.
Lt. Col. Chester P. Pomar, a member of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) Kaisang-Bisig Class 2009 and a schoolmate of the late Sr. Insp. Max Jim B. Tria, the "Last Man Standing" among the SAF 44, reminisced about his comrade's exceptional qualities and dedication. He acknowledged January 25, 2015, as one of the darkest days in PNP history and expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for naming the 50th Maneuver Company Regional Mobile Force Battalion 5 in Barangay Esperanza, Pilar, Sorsogon, as Camp Police Max Jim Ramirez Tria.
The PRO5 conducted a wreath-laying ceremony and rendered a 21-gun salute in honor of the SAF heroes. (PNA)
