Sorsogon Province Prepares for Potential Volcanic Unrest at Mt. Bulusan
The Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (SPDRRMC) has activated a standby alert status following increased volcanic activities reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at Mt. Bulusan.
While Mt. Bulusan remains under Alert Level 1, signifying low-level unrest with an elevated chance of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, the provincial government is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents potentially affected by the volcano's unrest.
Salvador Mendoza, Sorsogon Provincial Information Office Chief, revealed that Governor Edwin Hamor has directed the SPDRRMC and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers from Casiguran, Juban, Irosin, Bulusan, Barcelona, and Gubat to formulate plans and responses. These plans cover evacuation procedures, emergency shelters, medical teams, and resource mobilization for potentially affected areas.
In preparation, firetrucks have been placed on standby in areas susceptible to ashfall, and all SPDRRMO assets are ready for deployment. A total of 71 evacuation centers have been identified outside the six-kilometer danger zone in the towns of Casiguran, Irosin, and Juban, according to SPDRRMO data.
Emphasizing a proactive approach to disaster management, Governor Hamor stressed the importance of effective collaboration among concerned agencies. Phivolcs reiterated its advisory, reminding the public and local government units that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited.
