BACOLOD CITY – The provincial government of Negros Occidental has pledged to enhance immunization efforts against Covid-19 and other vaccine-preventable diseases, focusing on the most vulnerable groups. This commitment was articulated during the three-day project orientation and micro-planning session on the Covid-19 Vaccine Delivery Support Tranche (CDS 3) held at Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay City.
Conducted by Relief International, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the Department of Health (DOH), the project orientation aims to accelerate and strengthen vaccination initiatives for high-risk populations in the province, as stated in the provincial government's Thursday release.
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson highlighted the province's achievements in vaccinating the target population against Covid-19 and other communicable diseases. As of July last year, Negros Occidental fully vaccinated 1.38 million residents against Covid-19, representing 66.04 percent of the targeted 2.09 million vaccinees and 80 percent of the province’s 2.62 million population, set by the Department of Health.
Despite these accomplishments, Governor Lacson acknowledged challenges in reaching the most vulnerable groups and preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. He emphasized the need to further strengthen efforts to save more lives.
“The significance of immunization cannot be overstated, as it has played a very important role in diminishing the spread of deadly diseases and has saved countless lives throughout history,” said Lacson. He added that preventing the spread of diseases through immunization has proven to be more effective and cost-efficient than treating diseases that could have been prevented.
The CDS 3 is strategically designed to integrate Covid-19 vaccination seamlessly with routine immunization programs. It aims to strategize and plan specific actions and activities to increase immunization coverage, particularly in priority areas.
The project orientation and micro-planning session will conclude on January 19. (PNA)
