ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has issued a reminder to the public to maintain adherence to health protocols, particularly as a new variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has resulted in four fatalities in Iloilo.
Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon, IPHO chief, conveyed on Thursday afternoon that the province has recorded 88 cases of the highly transmissible JN.1 variant, leading to four deaths in the past three months, according to the Department of Health Western Visayas records.
“The four deaths were all among individuals with compromised immune systems. The oldest fatality was 87 years old, while the youngest was less than a year old. The other two adults had underlying health conditions,” she disclosed during a media interview.
These cases, Quiñon noted, were documented from November 2023 to January this year.
Recently, she observed an increase in people experiencing flu-like symptoms. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether it is a new strain of Covid-19 due to limited testing.
The health officer emphasized that the new strain is highly contagious. Therefore, during the festival season, the public is strongly encouraged to wear masks, practice regular disinfection, and maintain physical distancing. This is especially crucial for senior citizens, individuals with compromised immune systems, and children with weaker immune systems.
Quiñon urged people to avoid exposure in crowded areas and enclosed spaces whenever possible.
As of January 18, the province has 300 active Covid-19 cases spread across its 42 municipalities and one component city. Among the total cases, 190 are admitted, with 44 asymptomatic and 66 symptomatic individuals under home quarantine. (PNA)
