CHED Chair De Vera Assumes Leadership in Mindanao SUCs Following Commissioner's Dismissal

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – CHED Chair J. Prospero De Vera III Assumes Leadership in Mindanao SUCs

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chair J. Prospero De Vera III will step into the role of Board of Regents (BOR) chairman for a public tertiary school in Cagayan de Oro City and several other state colleges and universities (SUCs) in Mindanao following the dismissal of one of its commissioners.

In a memorandum dated January 9, circulated online on Tuesday, De Vera announced that he would personally take on the position of BOR chair for the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines and five other SUCs.

This change comes after the removal of Jo Mark Libre, the former commissioner who faced dismissal from CHED due to charges of nepotism and grave misconduct as per an order from the Office of the Ombudsman.

Libre, who was appointed CHED commissioner in February 2022, held the chair-designate position in 24 BORs across various SUCs, mainly in Mindanao. Following Libre's dismissal, De Vera and three other commissioners have divided the chairmanship responsibilities for these 24 SUCs.

Last year, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Chairperson Karlo Nograles also dismissed Libre for malpractices related to his role at Davao del Norte State College. He was accused of manipulating plane ticket prices for international travel in 2016, leading to the CSC's decision to uphold its 2019 ruling while excluding falsification of official documents, as it was already covered under the offense of serious dishonesty.
