Revitalizing the Ilocos Red Peanut: Northern Luzon's Push for Growth and Innovation

LAOAG CITY – Efforts are underway in Northern Luzon to promote the resurgence of an indigenous gem that has yet to fully shine despite a growing market demand – the Ilocos red peanut.

This particular variety, cultivated by farmers predominantly in the Ilocos and Cagayan regions, received a significant boost during the two-day “Peanut FIESTA (Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agency), held at the Carig Campus of Cagayan State University (CSU) in Tuguegarao City on Jan. 24 to 25.

According to Melinda Calumpit, a senior science research specialist from the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Ilocos Region, peanuts are a crucial food crop in Ilocos and Cagayan Valley, with Enrile town earning the distinction as the peanut capital of the Philippines.

Calumpit noted, “Due to its versatile uses for food, animal fodder, solvents and oils, textile materials, cosmetics and medicine, there has been an increasing demand for it.”

Beyond its use for edible oil, peanuts play a vital role in the production of peanut butter, confections, roasted peanuts, snack products, meat product formulation extenders, soups, sauces, and desserts.

Experts highlight that peanuts aid in preventing heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels, preventing the formation of small blood clots, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks or strokes. Additionally, peanuts contribute to weight loss and decreased appetite.

Responding to the growing demand for peanuts, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCARRD) led the two-day event, showcasing research and technological breakthroughs to revitalize the peanut industry in the region.

The event featured various technologies, including those focused on improving yield, post-harvest processes, and marketing to strengthen the industry.

Financial and technical support are also available for farmers, investors, and technology adopters through loan programs and services offered by institutions such as the Land Bank of the Philippines, DA, Agricultural Training Institute, DOST, and the Department of Trade and Industry, among others.

In Ilocos Norte, a peanut seed production site was established in Dingras town, promoting at least 25 varieties through the efforts of the DA Regional Field Office 1 to address the limited sources of planting materials. (PNA)'
