LAOAG CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has earmarked over PHP50 million for its cash-for-work program, benefiting Ilocos Norte farmers grappling with the effects of a dry spell.
Engineer Theresa Bacnat, officer-in-charge of the provincial agriculture office, confirmed this during a media interview on Monday, stating that the program is set to launch sometime this week.
“The cash-for-work program aims to assist approximately 11,673 farmers. Each participant will receive PHP4,350 and contribute 10 days of community service,” she explained.
The initial batch of beneficiaries includes farmers from Vintar, Bacarra, and Laoag City, whose farms have been adversely affected as some rivers began to run dry since December 2023.
As part of the El Niño national action plan, the DSWD plays a role in the food security cluster, led by the Department of Agriculture (DA), ensuring a stable supply of essential food commodities during the dry spell.
In addition to distributing various agricultural inputs and ongoing fuel subsidy programs, the Ilocos Norte government continues to accept farmers' requests through its Agri Ka Dito program. This initiative provides immediate assistance in the face of rising costs of agricultural inputs, fuel, and calamities. (PNA)
